The Commodore Perry Flag was flown aboard Oliver Perry's ship the Lawrence during the War of 1812. Oliver Hazard Perry was commanding lead for an American squadron in the famous Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. Oliver Hazard Perry had named his ship the Lawrence after Captain James Lawrence, the hero of a previous battle of New England whose final words were "Don't Give Up The Ship."
