Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings joined the NFL in 1961 as the league's 14th franchise,
after withdrawing from the AFL. Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota the Vikings
play in the North Division NFC, at least since the divisional realignment in
2002 before that they played in the Central Division.
Some cool Vikings notes:
- The team got their official name, the Minnesota Vikings on September 27, 1960. This was intended reflect Minnesota's place as a center of Scandinavian American culture.
- "Skol, Vikings" the Minnesota Vikings fight song
is played when the team scores and is also played at half time and at the end of
games.
- Some Viking fans have been known to dress up wearing "Helga hats".
- Helga
hats mimic the helmets of Viking warriors, however I doubt Vikings actually wore purple
hats with white horns. The cool thing about these hats though is the fact that
the real "Helga hats" are hand assembled in the Twin Cities area. Not to be
confused with the knock offs, some vendors have imported from overseas in recent
years.
- At home games the Gjallarhorn is loudly played when the team score, or
pulls off a great play. A flash cannon is also fired when the Vikings score
touchdowns adding to the excitement and fun of a Minnesota Vikings home game.
